Spruce Root Baskets

Basketmaking in Newfoundland from spruce roots and witherod (Viburnum spp). This video is from 1982 and it was already claimed to be a dying art then. This relatively short video doesn't insruct fully on how these are made, but it goes through the process with just information enough that it might be possible to attempt one! The spruce roots used are from white spruce and harvested between June and August. The rods are "witherod" or "wild raisin" which could either be Viburnum nudum or Viburnum cassinoides both of which grow in moist, shady sites.

Not Seeing Wood or Trees : Theoretical Structural Archaeology

From Geoff Carter, a Structural Archeologist comes a look at how wood has played a role in history but which is not given much credit. This is because most wood artifacts do not survive the weathering of time, unlike other artifacts like stone or metal. Therefore there is little evidence of how wood was used, what exact forms it took and the processes used to make the objects, even though there is lots of evidence that wood was used and that it had a significant role in the formation of a myriad of everyday objects. Spoonfest 2013

There appeared to be a severe under-representation in spoon making instructors from Canada, yet we are backyard to one of the world's largest forest resources. Where is our spoon making tradition?

Imagine what could be produced just from the waste of the current forestry industry, how many people it could employ and what products we could produce locally without importing another plastic 'thing' from China.
